Two walkers on the dune path to NIUS Beach House, with the beach and the sea behind them

About NIUS · since 2019

Easy living by the sea.

On the south beach of Zandvoort, you walk down beach access 5. There, NIUS Noord, the lounge and NIUS Zuid stand side by side on the sand, with the sea in front and the dunes behind. That’s us.

NIUS has been here since 2019 and it’s a place where you can just be yourself. You come in with sand on your shoes or in your best suit, for a coffee after your beach walk or dinner with the whole family. The sea in front of you, good food on the table and lovely people around you. Making new memories.

The biggest difference from our neighbours only shows in November. That’s when most beach bars are taken down and the beach is left empty. We stay put. The fire is lit, the sauna arrives on the beach and the light over the sea is different every day. Anyone who has seen it once comes back in winter.

The place

One pavilion, two seasons.

In summer the terrace runs right onto the sand. You sit with your feet in the sand, on a sunbed by the sea or under a parasol with a glass of rosé.

In winter everything moves indoors. The open fire burns in NIUS Noord and Zuid, surrounded by vintage sofas and large plants, and through the glass all around you look out to sea.

The people

A Beach Hero, a Table Wizard and a Morning Champion.

That’s what we call the roles here. Behind those names is a permanent core team who are here all year round, and in summer a large group of school pupils and students who join them.

The name

NI(PI)US.

NIUS is also a wine brand: a range of organic wines from Spain, made by Rudolf Nipius. The idea came about by the sea, on Goeree-Overflakkee. NIUS is the family name Nipius without the letters ‘pi’; they’ve been lifted out and appear on the label as the symbol π.

The pavilion is where you can taste those wines. You drink them here by the glass, with drinks or with dinner. The brand’s motto suits the beach too: live easy, drink it easy.

Even back then: by the sea, all year round.

Zandvoort was never just a summer village. These photos were taken in March, September, October and November, on the same beach and the same promenade where we stand today. And in 2001 our pavilion was built here, under the name Take Five at the time.
